Things have been far too busy here lately, hence the no-posting. To make it up to you, we'll have new book excerpts shortly. And in the meantime, a few more thoughts on covers.
Irene Gallo's blog is the place to go for cover scoop, and John Picacio has interesting insights from the artist's point of view, but it's worth noting just how far ahead the covers are done for books. I have a cover conference in 2 weeks for August mass-markets, one of which I've literally just bought in the last week, and if not for the 4th of July holiday and sales conference, this cover conference would have been earlier. Likewise, we're about to cover conference our Summer 2008 hardcovers and trade paperbacks, and the art director would have preferred to conference a month-plus ago, if not more. (However, we need to have some idea of the manuscript/story/idea before we can talk to the author about cover ideas, so...) In the meantime, most of the cover artists have already been booked for these titles, or we wouldn't be able to get them.
After the jump, some new Summer '07 covers I am particularly thrilled with, from space opera to sf to historical fantasy.
