Okay, Kate here, with thoughts and brilliant insights about last week's episode of BSG. I forgot how DARK this show is! Just so you know me a little better, here are my favorite moments, from all past seasons, not in numerical order:
1) Starbuck/Apollo with that pyramid ball when she gets back from Caprica with the Arrow of Apollo and starts wearing her hair in that cute little ponytail. You know what I'm talking about: No takebacks!
2) Adama giving Apollo the keys to the Pegasus, intense Titanic-sounding Irish music in background. Seriously, I got teary.
3) Adama giving Roslin a tiny little smooch midway through Season Two, before she gets miraculously cured by Hera's spinal fluid or whatever
4) Discovering that Anders was one of the Final Five, because I really thought he would be; and discovering that Chief was, because I didn't
5) Starbuck's coming back from the dead. I screamed.
6) When Adama rescued the refugees from New Caprica. And shaved off his moustache. Oh, and corollary: when Lee got skinny again.
Here's my least favorite moment:
1) When Billy got dumped by Dualla, caught her going on a date with Apollo, and then DIED.
As you can see, I like the happy moments. Don't get me wrong -- I wouldn't trade the intensity of these final episodes for anything, and I think the first few episodes of season three, when everyone is a sad, pathetic mess on New Caprica, are some of the most powerful the show's ever done. BUT I am a big sucker for the moments of hope and faith and personal connection (however few and far between they may be). Sadly, there weren't too many last week, were there?
SPOILERS AHEAD. Don't click through if you haven't yet watched last Friday's episode.
First of all: Baby Nicky is not half-cylon! This is awesome for a number of reasons: 1) It makes Callie even more hateful, even from beyond her poor airlocked grave; 2) It neatly ties up a lot of awkward loose ends the writers left dangling (i.e., why isn't Nicky ever in the Opera House? and if the miracle that made Hera was LOVE, how come Nicky was possible, since Callie smelled like cabbage? and how can we focus the storyline on the Chief's confused allegiances if he's also struggling with single fatherhood?); 3) It gives Hot Dog something to do, now that we don't spend any time with the pilots anymore; 4) THE MOST IMPORTANT: now there will be no dangling stepchildren when the Chief and Boomer (original flavor) find love, sweet love!
Secondly: Man, it is scary and upsetting watching Roslin go nuts. Part of the reason I love Adama so dearly is that I know that at least every other episode he will put the entire fleet, and thus the FUTURE OF THE HUMAN RACE, on the line for one of his fake daughters. I love that, every single time it happens. But the other side of that coin is that I love Roslin because I know she WILL NOT. Because she is clear-minded and far-sighted enough to put her personal baggage behind her role as a leader. (I also just love the way that Mary McDonnell speaks, very precisely and cleanly, clipping off her words when she gets angry. She always sounds presidential.) Anyway, I really trust them to Do the Right Thing. So it freaked me out to see Roslin turn away from her responsibilities, and I hope we don't have to see much more of it. Also? I hope we don't have to see much more of Adama and Roslin in bed together, because they're, like, my Galactica parents; and I appreciate the authenticity but Roslin's bald head creeps me out, too.
Thirdly: Oh, Gaeta. You are going to die. And I will be sorry. And I will really enjoy watching your storyline, and I will probably cry when you die even though I am disappointed in you, because your turning traitor is not really your fault. You're not even a traitor, really! The Fleet is falling apart! The President is running around bald and crazy! The cylons are everywhere! Starbuck said she'd punch your gimpy little face in! I'd be upset, too, were I in your place. And that Tom Zarek can be charming (remember when he told Roslin he wished she'd stolen the election?).
I have to admit the Callie "smells like cabbage" is probably my all-time favorite line on the show..what does that say about me?? And, Gaeta is SO going to die and I'm SO going to enjoy that episode. No one can go against the old man!

If Nicky was never half-cylon, why did Callie look at him in horror when she learned the Chief was a cylon? Why did she want to kill the kid?
Also? I didn't realize what a terrible father the Chief is. I mean, okay, you're not bioDad, but you're going to leave the poor motherless baby with a man he doesn't even know?
And I agree with Kate: As much as I like Roslin and Adama together, I don't want to actually SEE them together.
