Comic-Con report

Bumblebee Comic-Con International was, as always, insanely crowded, chaotic, overpowering,Psylocke, gambit and stormcat and a ton of fun. We had a number of authors there, plus our sales force braved the con for the first time, and loved it. Most of Comic-Con is running around meeting authors and others, then wandering the floor in sensory overload, but here are a few highlights.

Wednesday/preview night, I found the most traumatizing sight of the con: colognes based on Star Trek, including Pon Farr, Sulu pour homme, and Shirtless Kirk.

Eos authors Thursday's Morrow/Avon/Eos cocktail party was a blast--with authors, booksellers,RAymond Feist bloggers et al. hanging out in the swank Bardello lounge. The unisex bathroom was alternately a hit or a shock, and apparently I missed Dolph Lundgren walking past totally drunk... Attendees included Raymond E. Feist, Sophia Nash, Guillermo del Toro, Richard Kadrey, Jocelynn Drake, Merrie Destefano, Lou Anders, John Picacio, Ann Vandermeer, and many more.

Friday morning Guillermo del Toro signed THE STRAIN and gave away a few galleys of THE FALL. That afternoon Brom signed THE CHILD THIEF.

Bite me panel That afternoon, our BITE ME: Beyond Vampires in Urban Fantasy panel was a huge success. Authors included SDCC Special Guest Tanya Huff, Random House YA Bite me signing--kate & liu author Lauren Kate, and Eos authors Mario Acevedo, Merrie Destefano, Jocelynn Drake, and Richard Kadrey.  Room was packed (despite Joss Whedon speaking down the hallway) and topics ranged from vampires, writing and research, to evil unicorns.  Signing afterwards was great, run by the fabulous Mysterious Galaxy booksellers (special thanks to Maryelizabeth Hart for all her help!).

The Oil Spill (with nods to post-apocalyptic novels)

Numerous sf novels start after a major disaster, as humanity reacts and rallies to devastation. Sheri S.Tepper's novels are deeply concerned with nature and ecology, as are the Wess'har War novels by Karen Traviss, and Sara Creasy's recent debut SONG OF SCARABAEUS, plus several of Kim Stanley Robinson's novels, Paolo Bacigalupi's incredible WIND-UP GIRL, and many others.

It's very interesting to read about in a speculative novel. It's less so in real life.

Everyone's heard about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. If you're like me, you read the headlines and turn or click away before the latest wildlife-in-oil picture makes you cry. It's human nature--we simply aren't meant to focus for long periods of time on tragedies (when was the last time you heard about what's happening in Haiti?).

I very rarely conflate my professional and personal lives on this blog--the focus should be on the Eos authors and their works--but I'm doing so here today.

Because the oil spill is going to affect all life (human and animal) and the planet, and we're all going to be worse off because of it.  If you're not directly involved, you can't see how awful this is, and even then it's not going away. We're already seeing the side effects--oyster bars closing in New Orleans, oil being absorbed into the atmosphere and re-entering as rain, etc.--and we're going to pay for it (directly and indirectly), and the next generation as well, and probably the one after that.

Match It for Pratchett

As you may know (Bob), Terry Pratchett has Alzheimers. He's now made a $1 million US (500,000 pound) donation to the Alzheimer's Research

Fans around the world are organizing a 'Match It for Pratchett' donation drive, with the goal of matching his donation.  Doners also have a chance to win a replica of the Luggage used in the upcoming BBC production of THE COLOR OF MAGIC. Details are here.  (N.B. The chance to win may be only open to UK residents.)

My grandmother died of Alzheimers, and it was fairly advanced by the time I was old enough to know her. So while I have a couple of memories of her teaching me how to arrange flowers (she taught flower-arranging and judged flower shows), I never really knew her.

I'll be donating to to the US Alzheimer's Association in her memory, and to the UK fund in the hopes that soon neither organization will need donations.
