Sandman Slim in new Blondie song!

Aloha Just how cool is Richard Kadrey? Well, his antihero Sandman Slim makes a guest appearance in "Sleeping Giant," a bonus track on Blondie's new PANIC OF GIRLS. http://t.co/oA8EswUe

ALOHA FROM HELL will be out 10/18.

“Richard Kadrey’s next Sandman Slim book will be out in OCTOBER, so mark your calendars if you’re as much a fan of these incredibly visionary and savage books as I am....These books are incredibly hard-boiled, and the endings are not H.E.A. But Kadrey’s a fascinating writer and no matter how vicious Sandman Slim gets, we’re rooting for him to win.”   — Charlaine Harris

“I’ve been reading Kadrey since his days as one of the original Mirrorshades-era cyberpunks, and this bad-ass supernatural horror stuff is clearly the material he was born to write. Kadrey has an ungodly (literally) amount of fun with Stark’s wryer-than-wry and violenter-than-violent observations and dialog. … And don’t let the ‘supernatural’ label throw you off: Kadrey isn’t reboiling the thrice-brewed tea of Stoker or Rami or Crowley in these books. He goes back to the old grimoires and the Ur legends and plunders them for monsters, demons and metaphysics that are so ancient they’re fresh.”

Baby Got Book

Okay, so I grew up in the '80s and obviously love books, but even without that, this is classic.  Children's editor Cheryl Klein has rewritten the immortal lyrics of Sir Mix-a-Lot's 'Baby Got Back,' for books.  Totally made my afternoon (and it's not like I needed that tea anyway).

"[Female voice]
Oh, my, god. Becky, look at her book. It is so big. *scoff* She looks like, one of those, librarians' girlfriends. But, you know, who understands those librarians? *scoff* They only talk to her, because, she looks like a total bibliovore, 'kay? I mean, her book, is just so big. *scoff* I can't believe it's just so thick. It's like, out there. I mean - gross. Look! She's just so ... smart!"

Check it out here.

Where Do You Get Your Ideas?, Or Me, Music, and the Civil War, James D. Macdonald

Land_2 A long time ago, when I was six (and even younger) my family used to go visit my grandmother (on my father's side) in Eagle River, Wisconsin. She had a record player, and on a couple of the records that she had (old 78 rpm shellac records--anyone remember those?), two of the songs were "Gallant Pat Murphy of the Irish Brigade" and "Wake Nicodemus."

I don't remember who did "Pat Murphy," but "Wake Nicodemus" was sung by Burl Ives . (A sample of Ives singing "Wake Nicodemus" is track 26 on disk one at that link.)  That's when I learned that song. And that's the Nicodemus that our ship in Land of Mist and Snow is named after. (It's also why the spirit Nicodemus lives in the center of a wooden sphere--it's the heart of the old hollow tree.)
