Sorry for the no-posting--it's been busy at the office.  Luckily, it's also been a fabulous review week, so look for great new reviews for Kim Harrison, Mario Acevedo, and Vicki Pettersson in the next few days.  Plus a sneak peek at the incredible quotes for the upcoming New Space Opera.

Speaking of Vicki, thank you to everyone who emailed about getting a review galley.  We've sent out all the galleys we had (and in fact, we've already gotten a review back!), and will post them all shortly.

We've got some fun stuff coming up for February (once the ground hog doesn't see his shadow, that is), including Author Guest Blogs from Trudi Canavan and Rebecca Ore, another cover discussion/preview, and more.

BRIDGE OF SOULS -- "Best of 2006"

I'm so pleased to be able to announce that Kirkus Reviews has selected Fiona McIntosh's Bridge of Souls: The Quickening Book Three as one of its ten best SF/Fantasy books of 2006!

Publishing and S*tan

Previously I noted that both Paperback Writer and TNH at Making Light had posted their definitions of a Publishing Devil's Dictionary.

Now the always-snarkalicious Miss Snark has created her own set of definitions here. Again, do not drink anything while reading.

Seriously people, this is killing me. I don't function well without caffeine, and you're making me lose drinks all over the place! <g>

Absolutely worth reading, as long as the drinks are well away from the keyboard.

(And yes, there is an evil publishing cabal, yes... That's why we all have huge apartments and fly off to Fiji all the time. *laugh*)

Acquisitions/Author news, etc.

We've had some exciting acquisitions lately that we wanted to share as we try to catch up after the holidays...

Jennifer Brehl has bought a new science fiction adventure from George R. R. Martin, Gardner Dozois, and Daniel Abraham, loosely based on their novella "Shadow Twin."

Kate Nintzel has bought two books from Lois McMaster Bujold, in the same world as THE SHARING KNIFE: BEGUILEMENT and THE SHARING KNIFE: LEGACY.

I've bought a fabulous debut novel called THE SOMNAMBULIST by Jonathan Barnes, about a stage conjurer who must stop a sorcerous uprising in turn-of-the-century London. I (and many others here) was absolutely hooked from the first page, and I couldn't be more thrilled about this great new story.

Also, a quick note: for those subscribers to Jim Baen's online UNIVERSE magazine, Eos author Kristine Smith has a Jani Kilian story in the December issue.  We'll publish the next Jani Kilian adventure in Fall 2007.

B&N.com best of 2006

It's a good news sort of day--Mario Acevedo's THE NYMPHOS OF ROCKY FLATS was picked as one of B&N.com's Best Books of 2006!

"The opening lines of Mario Acevedo's debut novel -- 'I don't like what Operation Iraqi Freedom has done to me. I went to the war a soldier; I came back a vampire.' -- perfectly sum up the ambiance of this charmingly irreverent blood-sucking mystery."

The next Felix Gomez novel, X-RATED BLOODSUCKERS, will be published in March.

Early reviews for FOR A FEW DEMONS MORE

Kim Harrison's upcoming new novel, FOR A FEW DEMONS MORE, has just received a fabulous Publishers Weekly review: “{A} demonkicking extravaganza… Action-packed and full of Rachel’s persistent erotic ruminations, this titillating tale includes a shocking finale that will leave fans panting for the next installment in the Hollows series."

And Booklist calls it "weirdly charming." Woo hoo!

I was also absolutely thrilled to see that Charlaine Harris also loves it, since I love the Sookie books--thanks Charlaine!

Publishing Devil's Dictionary

A Paperback Writer has come up with a Devil's Dictionary for publishing. Here's the Editor entry:

Editor - 1) a sadomasochist; 2)) a kind but crazy person who makes a career out of working with authors to improve their manuscripts; listens to their lies, tantrums and crying fits; extends their deadlines; meets with them over mystery chicken entrees at industry cons and suffers countless bouts of depression, con crud and tinitus as a result; 3) an industry professional who drinks Maalox or Jack Daniels for lunch.

(For the record, it's Diet Coke or some variant of tea during the day. The scotch and tequila come out at night. Mostly.).

And the always-erudite Teresa Nielsen Hayden adds her own fabulous variations at the must-read blog Making Light.

This is far more entertaining than the huge stacks of paper on my desk. *cough*
